Wednesday's post: Joan Blondell

I love The Killers, I'm so glad TCM is airing it as part of their Summer Under the Stars tribute to Burt Lancaster. Love the Hemingway short story, in fact, the Nick Adams Stories are about all I do like by Hemingway, and I love the Robert Siodmak movie. It was my introduction to film noir as a teen and I still can't turn away from it. I even have a soft spot for the 1964 remake, because where else are you going to be able to see Ronald Reagan and Norman Fell in the same shot?

Tuesday's post: Conrad Veidt

Earlier this month I mentioned that Ann Dvorak day was my most anticipated date on this August's TCM Summer Under the Stars schedule. Well, that's only because I own all of the Busby Berkeley titles, and a few others, that they're showing during Joan Blondell day!

If you like those Berkeley titles you might want to give the non-Buzz musical Colleen a try at noon EST. It's a little late and a little light, but it's good fun for fans of Joan, Dick and Ruby with some Warren & Dubin songs.

Central Park has been on my personal want list awhile now so I'll be sure to record that one--I recommend you do the same with that and Lawyer Man right after it! 8 pm EST brings another can't miss, at least for me, with James Cagney's debut in Sinners' Holiday. Lots of gems today along with a few I hope turn out to be gems!

Joan Blondell is highlighted on an oversized card from an oversized set. This Aguila Chocolate premium was one of 300 issued out of Uruguay sometime in the early 1930's. They're on more of a heavy paper than card stock and measure an impressive 3-3/16" X 4-1/2":

Monday's post: Joan Crawford

Aha, so this is why Casablanca did not air during Bogie's Summer Under the Stars day back on the 17th! Lots of Nazis on TCM Tuesday as they spend 24 hours of Summer Under the Stars with Conrad Veidt, best remembered as Major Strasser in Casablanca at 11:45 pm EST.

But wait, there's more! The most interesting movies on the TCM schedule are probably the pair of German silent films highlighted by an 8 pm EST showing of The Hands of Orlac (1925), a story you might remember better when it was redone in 1935 as Mad Love, starring Peter Lorre. Late in the evening (or early Wednesday morning) TCM shows The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919), which is pretty much mind candy.

Several lesser seen movies fill Tuesday's 24 hours with Conrad Veidt, enjoy!

Sunday's post: Cary Grant

Ah, TCM, now this is the kind of Summer Under the Stars schedule I really like! Monday TCM gives us 24 hours of Joan Crawford including one of her biggest and most beloved titles, Mildred Pierce. They also squeeze a documentary into the Prime Time hours and fill the day with movies from the early 1930's through the 1950's.

There are a few over-played 1930's and especially 40's titles, but also plenty of lesser shown 1930's titles that will have my DVR a-whirlin'! Titles this early 30's fan will be sure to record include Forsaking All Others, I Live My Life, Possessed, and Sadie McKee, a couple of which I've seen and I couple I have not.

Another of my favorite tobacco card sets is this one, the 1934 Godfrey Phillips Stars of the Screen set, and today's star, Joan Crawford, has a particularly attractive card thanks to the pink tint jazzing up an already attractive image. Plus I love the oval frame which adorns every card in the set:
